May, 2007 : THE SUMMER OF LOVE TURNS 40

SWEEPING UP THE SPOTLIGHT: JEFFERSON AIRPLANE LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST 1969 (RCA/Legacy) - Recorded in November, the same month Volunteers was released, this previously unissued 61-minute set finds the classic lineup at their absolute peak, performing a great set list ("Volunteers," "Good Shepherd," "Plastic Fantastic Lover," "The Ballad Of You & Me & Pooneil," "White Rabbit," much more), plus several songs not found on any JA albums, with brief introductory liner notes by Jorma Kaukonen;

Without question, 1969 was the absolute pinnacle year for the original, classic Jefferson Airplane lineup - Marty Balin, Paul
Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Grace Slick, and Spencer Dryden - and this November concert is the closest official recording before the changes that began to disrupt the group in 1970 (Kantner and Slick's Blows Against the Empire side project; Dryden's departure to New Riders Of the Purple Sage; Jorma and Jack's Hot Tuna; and Balin's growing disaffection).

1969 began with the February release of Bless Its Pointed
Little Head, compiled from live performances of late-'68 at Bill
Graham's Fillmore West and Fillmore East. In between milestone
appearances at Woodstock (in August) and Altamont Speedway with the Rolling Stones (in December), Volunteers was released in November (the time frame for this concert CD). Volunteers was one of JA's most successful LPs, charting for 44 weeks. It closed with "Volunteers" (conspicuously Balin's only contribution), and contained "Good Shepherd" (a spiritual reworked by Kaukonen) - and those two numbers open this Fillmore East concert recorded the same month as the Volunteers album release.

Jefferson Airplane's live set book at this time included songs from late 1967's Surrealistic Pillow ("Plastic Fantastic Lover," "3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds," "White Rabbit"), summer 1968's After Bathing At Baxter's ("Won't You Try/Saturday After-noon," "The Ballad Of
You & Me & Pooneil"), and the title tune from Christmas 1968's Crown Of Creation. Die-hard fans will be drawn to three rarities: "Uncle Sam Blues" (never recorded for any JA album, but a concert favorite - it was performed at Woodstock - and a precursor of Jorma and Jack's Hot Tuna, where it became a staple); "Come Back Baby" (a Lightnin' Hopkins blues that also became a Hot Tuna standard); and the familiar JA concert-only jam session "You Wear Your Dresses Too Short." All three of these rarities (in different unissued versions) highlighted 1992's must-have three-CD box set, Jefferson Airplane Loves You. Jorma's liner notes on this new CD beatify the "beauty and strength in the roughness" of the concert, recorded when he was 28 years old. "You need to take this trip with us," he concludes.
