Well, I don't know about your neck of the woods, but here in the US of A most people know Grace's name way ahead of any others. With most of the people I meet when I mention Jorma or Jack I get this blank look in return, until I mention Jefferson Airplane. I think one of Marty's sore points was that Grace tended to get more attention then him, even though he wrote more of the songs and was the true founder of the band. I think it's pointless to debate who was the best, as the band was, quite simply, the sum of it's parts and it had some of the most talented parts there are. The sound of JA was, quite simply, the sound of Marty, Paul, Jorma, Jack, Spencer, and Grace. Any one of these could have made some impressive records of their own, and, in various combinations, did. But the sound of Jefferson Airplane was unique. The Jefferson Starship was no more the Jefferson Airplane than was Hot Tuna. Grace, on her solo albums, was Grace. Paul and Grace (and Davcid Frieberg) were Paul and Grace (and David). While I appreciate your appreciation of Grace, keep in mind that this is the Jefferson Airplane website and folks here tend to like them all...

Cheers,
Dave

Sorry, when it looks like that i am only for Grace !
With "experts" it's people from "music - sites"
and "music - magazines". They don't know
who wrote the 2 hits or they find Grace so less
that it's not a deal to write her name......
She represents for me a generation
and i have respect for her.....
For men it was MUCH easyer to do....

Now, 30-01-2006.....
I think it's a good thing, Grace would agree....
Now she can have a quit and peacefull time.......
Without all that paparazzi and mediaf*ckers.....

And, yes you'r right.....
I like 'm all from JA....if i wouldn't i wasn't here....

Those times i burned my guitar was like a sacrifice.
You sacrifice the things you love.
I love my guitar.

Now THAT is cool.

At first I didn't look at the picture and I was thinking " Best guitar player? You kidding?" then I saw the picture. Nice one!
They are extremely uncomfortable with the idea that I am a teenage girl in the body of a 60 year old career criminal who has already died 16 times...

A few weeks ago, I made a vote in a referendum (don't know the english name?) about best singer, guitarist, bass player, drummer...
It was on a french Rammstein fan site.

I said Jack for the best bass player ever and Jorma was something like 3rd or 4th.
Anyone had ever heard about them!!!!

Casady/Kaukonen is THE rythmic duet!
Marty was the velvet, Grace was the acid, Jorma was the knife, and Jack was the hammer!

It's so bad that here in France Jack and Jorma are so unknown...

If you don't know Jorma, you don't know Jack...

Too bad you missed them when they toured France last year - let's hope they give you another chance!
But even most Americans do not know or remember these guys - that's their loss!!
We here know who's number one!!!
It's good times now - I can see the light!

Point well made. Like i've said before it's pancakes and cake.... For me, Hendrix at woodstock, though awesome, lacked Noel Redding. I don't know enough about music ability to rate Noel Redding over billy cox, but when I watch it Hendrix seems detached from the rest of the band except Mitch Mitchell. It is often just the unique combination of the 'parts' that make a band great. For example if Hendrix replaced Jorma, JA would never have been the band they were regardless of how talented he was.
I think that makes sense :?
In summary JA RULE!!!!! :D

I think you'd find here in the UK that people do actually know of the Airplane as a band name and practically everyone who has acccess to a radio has heard 'We Built This City' although the connection isn't perhaps so obvious - but in much the same way that Hendrix is known as a name while perhaps half as many people again know who the Experience were, the songs often carry more weight than the musicians who played on (and wrote them) among the great unwashed. This doesn't just apply to the Airplane, Tuna, or any other connected group - exactly how many listeners can sing along to 'Show Me The Way' without the least amount of knowledge of Peter Frampton, unless the DJ puts it on alongside The Herd's 'From The Underworld' :

I guess that my generation (24 yrs) is known about their love towards rap music like Eminem, 50 cents, JA Rule and others.
Maybe they know something about the Beatles, but Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Crosby Stills & Nash, The Kinks etc. are strange names.
There is a reason why; almost every radiostation plays the same stuff and the history of music doesn't get attention.
Music is just a way to make money, there is nothing more about it.
I find it important that I make my environment of young people aware of different elements of the rich history of music.
If they don't know about the 60s, I'll let them hear it...
They cannot resist because I have to listen to their shit too.
In the end they appreciate it.

What Jon_G says about remembering a band or a band name is thrue.
The musicians are mostly overlooked, the band name counts.
Maybe that is the reason why many musicians want to step out of the shadow and start a solo career.

Jefferson Airplane is more then a bunch of great musicans.
It is a band with individuals with their own identity.
That goes for every man and woman...in the company you work, on the school, being a housewife/man or whatever.

In the next personal statement i don't
give links to the "stars or gods" and i
don't write the full names.......
(they are gone with some other things
on that ftp-server, i don't know 'm anymore)
I was searching for information about JA,
there was a writing from L.R.
Before i read his statement about Grace i was
a fan of L.R. (walk on the wild side) , now i say
it is not a prof. musician, he did some crap talk
about her !....and another star is gone....
Searching more....i read some from a woman S.N.
from F.M. (go your own way) she did "talk"
in a way....i don't like that !....sometimes....
Sometimes they realy think they are gods !!!
No !..it's not my crappy english !....
I would not post it here if it wasn't true !
If Jorma or Jack was like that man,
Grace like that woman ?
I think a lot of members of this forum
would not be here...i think so....
And gTarFreak on stage ?
I don't think so !....
FirstBaseman a signed guitar ?
I don't think so !...
These gods have security people around them...

And i read about some other gods...
They only do "the show" if there is
a box of Marlboro and Amstel beer...
or some Bacardi rum & CocaCola.
and a red rose on the left....crap...
Some of these gods get more $$$ in a week
than a band like JA in a year....shit for JA...
So 7 out of 10 bands today are crap !

Hey Destiny
That was just my Two cents on Jorma,Jack, and Spencer.......
Nothing against what you said at all.
I still love Grace Paul and Marty......
Without all of them JA would have never existed!!!
