Just curious as to what the origin of Pooneil is? I was wondering if Pooneil was a real person/etc. or just something fictious JA made up. I recently completed a new painting titled Pooneil in honor of The Ballad..

Pooneil is a combination of Winnie the Pooh and Neil Cassady, sort of a tribute to both.

I heard that instead of NEAL Cassady , the reference is actually to Fred NEIL...

Hmmmn, now I'm confused. You may be right I'll have to research this one. Memory's not what it used to be. Might be all that acid... or all the paste I ate in Sunday School....

I think the Fred Neil connection makes sense - because he wrote "The Other Side of This Life"?
I always wondered what Winnie Pooh bear had hidden in his honey pot - that made him see those "Heffalumps" and "Woozzles"? My wife loves that little critter, though...

I know for a fact the reference is to Fred Neil not Neal Cassidy.

Yeah, sorry, I agree, somehow Pooneil DOES refer to Freddie Neil. (As opposed to NEAL Cassady.) I guess Poofred sounded too funny (even for Paul).

By the way, Kantner/JS has added Ballad/Pooneil to their setlist. It sounds great, even though there is no dazzling Casady bass solo.

I like bass solos, especially a run of real deep notes that shake you up inside. Drum solos are a good time to answer mother nature at concerts!

Christina - your latest painting, with the fish and waves tattoo on the girl's back, is much more intriguing than your original Pooneil painting. The details of the tattoo are very well done, I thought - and I do not even care for tattoos, usually. The original Pooneil was too rigid, for the feel of the song...
