OK, "despised" is too strong a word for the Airplane, although the Observer's Book Of Birds does hate cuckoos because they sleep around and don't look after their kids. Maybe "not taken seriously" would be better.

There is no need to correct yourself,Sue.No need at all .You said it beautifully . ,,Despised '' is the right expression because Jeffersonian cuckoo was socially despised .It didn't fit the establishment's moral codes of the time.
