LATHER THE REAL MEANING
RETT

Postby JPPMcStepBBlues on Wed May 25, 2005 3:34 pm

"...But Lather stills finds it a nice thing to do
To lie about nude in the sand
Drawing pictures of mountains that look like bumps
And thrasing the air with his hands...."

That part is about when the Bear (Owsley) gave Jack Casady a pill of STP that was ten times to strong, after he took it was was found by the police drawing mountains in the sand naked and got arrested. I am pretty sure that the song was written for Spencer Dryden for his 30th birthday, the band always ragged on him about how he was older than everyone. In the Crown of Creation liner notes (the newest remastered version) it tells the meaning of the song pretty well.
If you were a cloud and you sailed up there,
You sail on water as blue as air;
You'd see me here in the fields and say,
"Doesn't the sky look green today?"

ok mexico is all about getting the weed across the borders into the states
and questions the then goverment,s (nixon) anti drug laws and i guess the song still does that with current united states goverment. drug laws.
quite simply put the song is a rallying call to free the weed
and to put an end to inprisonment for those boys and girls who use.
the refrence to richard is about richard nixon an old president
i think he got caught out telling lies.
and mr owsley i belive he may have been a chemist of sorts
hurry up sleep take me
else i'll be late for tea

Owsley was the chemist who made most of the acid in the 60's, he also was the person responsible for taping half of the concerts and giving the dead an awesome sound system. Thats why is "Mexico" Grace says, "Owsley you got some really good dope", he was the acid king!

You'd see me here in the fields and say,

I couldn't tell you for sure, but I think "Uncle Charlie" was the nickname of some famous smuggler who always imported tons of grass from Mexico.

I'd still like to know the story behind "Two Heads", though, now that you mention it.

Shooting Star by Dylan & Bad Company- 2 different songs with the same title, same as Oh Atlanta by Bad Company & Little Feat.

Oh, and what in the world is Twilight Double Leader about anyway?

I've got this one bootleg of an airplane show from like, 72 (Thanks Jonesy!) where Grace introduces TDL by saying something like "Now, we'd like to play you a song which has no meaning what-so-ever... believe me folks, I've been attempting to analyze it for like, a month...". I think it's just complete Kantner randomness.
