I picked the title song. I love all the songs especially Turn My Life Down, but Volunteers always seems to amaze me. :D

Wow. I love so many of those songs - Eskimo Blue Day, Hey Frederick, Wooden Ships, We Can Be Together...but I think ultimately my favorite from the album is Volunteers. :)

Tricky one! :)
I had to pick We Can Be Together- to me, it embodies 1969 as well as the Airplane itself in that year. It has some of the most stand-out riffs by Jorma I've ever heard, and it speaks of rebellion as well as love. The 'won't you try?' at the end is a link to 1967. Great vocals and one of my all time favorite Airplane songs.
Otherwise, I almost picked Hey Fredrick- only because I'm a huge fan of Jorma and he really kicks ass on that one.

Love the entire record, and the cover (hence my picture). :)

No problem picking for me.

Woodenships.

Where have all the young men gone? Gone for soldiers every one

A near impossible question, but I love Eskimo Blue Day.

I almost picked Good Shepard, mainly because of associations I have with it, spending time with a particular friend who loves that song. I almost picked We Can Be Together, because the lyrics are outstanding. Of course, I also considered Volunteers, since it's so iconic and evocative of the time (in my mind, before anyone jumps on me). But, Eskimo Blue Day prevailed.

I like Wooden Ships a lot too, but I like the live versions more because I think Paul's electric 12 string sounds better than the acoustic 12 on the album. And Marty usually had some lovely vocal improv at the beginning, and Jorma's solos were longer etc.

That 20 minute version on the 2nd woodstock CD is pretty amazing, but the Volunteers version is good if you don't have 20 minutes of your attention to spare. It certainly does the trick for me 8) Grace's voice seems to rise beyond the imagination on the 20 minute live Woodstock version.

I love how the band works in JPP McStep B Blues into it. The 20 minute version is my favorite.

Ooh yes, the Woodstock WS is really awesome.
I really love JPP McStep B Blues. I have the studio version of Wooden Ships with JPP McStep B Blues at the end- it's great but the sound quality is lacking. And there's a weird noise like a laser beam, or something from Blows Against the Empire at one point. Haha.
