The Airplane are just one of those bands that can draw people from any sort of fan-base.Diverse music is what its all about!But heres an album i think you should all check out if you havnt, the first Thin Lizzy album, self-titled released in 1971.Listening to it you would never guess its the band that did Jailbreak and The Boys are Back in Town.Its very trippy, proggy and has touches of everything from Hendrix to Celtic Folk.Any Airplane fan could love it.Definitely a good album.Almost even reminiscent of Bark, very little though.Maybe not.They go good together, is what i can say.

I know what you mean about Airplane being a kind of musical catch-all. You have Jack and Jorma from the blues background, Paul and Marty from the folk background, Spencer from jazz, and Grace from a more rock/pop background. Along with the expertise of the musicians, and great songs, I honestly think that it is this musical diversity that truly gave the Airplane its sound.

I'll definitely listen to that Thin Lizzy album.

Well atleast i can say im not the only metal head who loves JA.Oh, and remmember plasticfantastic, Marty also brought in R&B and soul occasionally, and Grace brought in occasional middle-eastern influences.Very rarely does the singer(or singers) be the experimental one(s).But also rarely is there two lead-singers in a rock band.Ah, the uniqueness of the Airplane.

That's a good point-- I was just going on the very basic, but when you get more specific, there is a lot more involved than just the factors I named.

And you are so right. They are unlike any band ever.

My wife's lesbian sister gave it to us about 20 years ago. Fell in love with his music. So Long Marianne, Master Song, etc. Don't know if it's for women, but I'm a man, and I love it.

Paul Simon - Graceland

Peter, Paul and Mary - best of.

Then there's Grand Funk Railroad, Live - 1971. Bought it from Germany as they changed the US CD words from "work all day making up nickel bags", to "Work all day making up Burlap bags".

John Mayall - The Turning point - Live at Fillmore East - 1969. They thought he was crazy for using a big bass fiddle instead of drums.

I also miss "The James Gang" - Thirds - with Funk No 49.

Dave Davies has to be one of the most underrated guitarists back when.
Just listen to the start of Till The End of the Day, and compare it with Layla.
DD gets the song started by hammering out just 3 chords, while Eric takes 35 seconds to do the same thing! I can play those chords a dozen times and not get tired of them.
For my money The Kinks were the best British singles band out there.
For the US, The Beach Boys.
Sometimes you don't need juice, a mug of coffee and pile of pancakes and bacon to start your day, what you want is one sharp heavy hit of espresso (maybe with a nip of cognac, but that's another story)!
So, let's hear it for the single!
