The Great Society-- What do you guys think?

Postby plasticfantastic on Wed Sep 16, 2009 11:28 pm

I've been listening to their album "Collector's Item", and I'm really starting to like them a lot. I think that they're very underrated-- Grace herself doesn't give them enough credit.

Just on that album, you have their fabulous version of Somebody to Love, Sally Go 'Round the Roses, Outlaw Blues, and Darkly Smiling (which is probably my favorite).

Have you guys heard this album? What do you think?

The 1965 live recordings sound a little bit amatuerish, but I know they really would have been great if they'd stayed together another year or so. I like the folkish 1966 Airplane, too. We got one brilliant group for the price of a good one and a promising one.

I really love those Collector Item's recordings. The Bob Dylan song they do on there is great, I haven't listened to them in so long. When this Dungen record is over that I am listening to right now, I am going to listen to that. Both part one and part two are great. I have this other record by them called, Somebody To Love (labeled as Grace Slick and The Great Society) and it has some good studio stuff not found on the Collector's Items recordings. I think it is only on vinyl though so you'll have to hunt for it that way but a lot of the material can be found on the Born To Be Burned collection. Another thing to be mentioned is Darby Slick used to play a fretless guitar and not too many people out of that scene were doing that and what other Frisco band has an oboe solo in any of their songs. In my opinion even if those recording sound "amateurish", they were way ahead of pretty much any other Frisco band back in 65 at least.

Awesome! I'll definitely look for that.

By the way, the recorder duet in Nature Boy is the epitome of awesome.

There's a slight weirdness there. Perhaps they were the first in that respect. Darker and more Oriental-sounding than the early Airplane

The collector's album is a combination of two live records, Conspicuous Only in its Absence, and How it Was, recorded at the Matrix on the same night. I cannot stress enough that this is live. And it is absolutely amazing. There are great songs you can't hear anywhere else.

I got the collector's CD just for the sake of the history behind it - Where Grace got her start. But when I hard it, I realized that they are a great group. I would allows suggest getting Born to Be Burned, which has their two released studio songs, as well as previously unreleased material. I don't think it is as good as their live performance, but it is still enjoyable listening.

I'll get that.

I agree with you-- they are incredibly underrated. Grace doesn't give them enough credit!

I love The Great! Society. Every time I hear "Everybody Knows" it just pumps me up for something. I can not help but move when I listen to that song

I have both the collector's item album and the CD of outtakes from Sundazed Records. I think they are a great band and I wish sometimes they went further. Darby's guitar playing is unique for its time and I find it inventive. Grace's vocals soar and I like the addition of other instruments like saxophones and recorders.

Yeah, I like them as well. I thought that the live material on the Collecter's Choice CD was from '66, not '65 though.
They definitely should've been allowed to make an album as both their original material and cover versions were pretty good. It's ironic that both of the Airplane's two biggest hits were Great Society songs.

The Great Society were a much more daring band ("trance-rock") than the early Jefferson Airplane (still very much folk rock). Jefferson Airplane never, never played "White Rabbit" live as well as the Great Society did.

Most of us seem to agree there about "White Rabbit".

Yeah, I'd say.

And personally, I love the Great Society's version of SOmebody to Love too. I wouldn't say it's as good as The Airplane's, but I do really like it a lot.

I don't think it's fair to compare considering Jefferson Airplane wasn't trying to reproduce the Great Society's sound. As for the Great Society, I like their song "Father Bruce" a lot.
