Anybody sure of what they are? I've found some at guitar tab web pages, but they all have it in the key of F-sharp... anyone sure that's the key it's actually in?

Yes, the famous Jack intro is F# - G.
Though for some reason I've seen it published a half-step or so different ... don't know why.

Hey Dave!!!

Yes, I agree many JA songs appear to be in the Key of G (F#) or Key of D (F# and C#).
Or, more to the point, many of Pauls's songs might be in that key.
A Theory: Many of the JA's (Paul's) songs are folk based and those two keys are common in folk music.
Another thing ... Paul plays a lot of songs in open D tuning. (Open G tuning is also popular). Major Gs and Fs are easy in open D (think Volunteers and The Other Side of This Life).
Make sense?
I think White Rabitt's F#/G intro is more of a coincidence. After all it is was written before Grace was with JA and she was after a Flamenco/Bolero kind of feel

The e-mail is RaineArtemis@aol.com. I would appreciate it. And while we're on the subject of keys, I have sort of noticed the F#, C# thing. I think the first chord of Two Heads is C#. Again, this makes me wonder exactly what the hell instrument Grace was using to write these things, because those are some REALLY annoying chords to finger (at least for me).

I just thought I'd add, yes, a lot of Paul's songs are in these keys, and so are Grace's. So it may well have something to do with Grace's voice as well - Marty doesn't write in these keys at all as far as I've seen, and Paul's songs are generally written much more with Grace in mind than Marty's, I think.

Also, the keys of G and D (at least as far as Grace's self-penned tunes) may have to do with her writing on piano (if she did, in fact, write on piano). Those are the two easiest keys to play in, next to C, of course.

Grace writing songs on piano would make sence. She's no virtuoso, but played a lot of piano on the Blows Against the Empire album.

The chords to White Rabbit in F#m can be found at olga.net. I think they are correct. But the guitar and bass tabs there aren't.

Somebody to Love is also in F#m. I have a Jefferson Airplane book published in 68 with transcriptions from After Bathing at Baxter's. It has Two Heads in F#m also.

Hey Zog, if it's not imposing, you don't suppose you could post some of the changes sometime, could you? I mean, I certainly wouldn't ask for a full transcription with words or anything, but knowing what the actually chords used in say, Rejoyce (that song has puzzled me about half a year now), or Two Heads, or Won't you Try would be really cool.

Okay Box! You picked a doozy to start with.

It would be hard to follow all these changes without the words, so I found the lyrics on another site and typed the chords over the words where they occur. But when I previewed this post the forum html collapses all the spaces so that the chords don't line up properly with the words anymore. (For example the first Cm should be on the word amber.) But at least you get the chords for each line of lyrics, so you should be a able to follow it. I can email you a Word doc or something if you want.

I didn't play this through to check ityet, but this is what the book says. Hope it helps. (I'll do some others another day.)
