Heard a great Airplane/Dead show from Toronto August, 1967. Great sound quality. Preliminary analysis of them is very uneven, w/some exceptions. Baxter's rehearsals sound good. Problem is finding performance and recording quality that stands. Performances generally do, I've noticed. However, sound is inconsistent.
I'm skipping right now. A few early songs per show. Right now listening to early Neil w/Crazy Horse from their Spring, 1970 shows.
First time I saw Neil was in Milwaukee, early January, 1973 touring w/the Stray Gators and doing HARVEST material. FIRST show ever for me, and the first gig for the band on that star-crossed tour. I didn't know that it wasn't going to be w/Crazy Horse. I knew little about except for the Springfield pop stuff that had hit the AM radio (not much) and EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS IS NOWHERE.
But I already knew one indespensible fact as I later left the show (rock solid excellent show-tour literally degenerated in a Hotel there later that night I guess). Neil MISSED Danny Whitten. Much is made of the guitar relationship w/ Stills. I won't deny their fiery excellence. Still, having seen the sluggish, very heavy Frank Stampedro Horse a number of times, Whitten just had the correct sensitive rhythem chops and harmonies. The Horse was lighter on their feet with him w/ a choppy and slightly funky feel.
Danny had O.Ded a month before. Neil had tried to cut him into the Gators for the tour, but he was so far gone during rehearsals that he couldn't hack it.
