Jefferson Airplane Takes Off

Postby sarah81744 on Fri Sep 30, 2005 4:47 am

I bought the Platinum & Gold edition CD at Best Buy a few months ago. I loved it and have been a fan ever since. Then I wanted JA's real CD's that were actually released in the 60's. So I bought Surrealistic Pillow and I got it in yesterday. I love it even more. I honestly dont think JA can make a bad song! I also ordered After Bathing at Baxter's (which I havent gotten it - and probably won't for a while.)
ANYWAYS,
I wanted to buy Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, but I dont know if it is any good. Does it sound different that Grace isn't singing in it? Grace isnt the whole reason I like the band - but does it still have the same JA sound? I just wanna know if it's worth the money to buy.

I would say go for it, it's a pretty good cd even without Grace. Signe, the original singer, was pretty good and Balin has a great voice. Don't buy it expecting it to sound the same as their music with Grace; this album has a blues sound more than anything else.

You'll love Takes Off. It actually has one of my favorite JA songs, It's No Secret, on it. Sounds trite, but this is where it all began for them, in terms of getting their vision out there. Elements of folk, blues and more; a bridge between electric folk and what was to become the "San Francisco Sound". Signe's voice is strong and yet harmonizes well with Paul and Marty. After nearly 40 years of listening I still enjoy this album. I have a stereo version I have manged to hang onto throughout these past decades. I believe the original LP was done both in mono and stereo. RCA called it "Dynagroove", whatever the heck that is. Oh, for the innocence of those days :wink:

I love the VOLUNTEERS album cover too... All the hilarious liner note spoof... The wonderful artwork on the groovy lyric sheet insert...

Best of all:

The original gatefold sleeve which makes a delicious peanut butter samwich!!!

Yummy yummy yummy I got Volunteers in my tummy.

//is very lame.

My favorite cover HAS to be After Bathing At Baxter's. That plane RULES!
They are extremely uncomfortable with the idea that I am a teenage girl in the body of a 60 year old career criminal who has already died 16 times...
