"Run Around" (uncensored version)

Postby Laeotaekhun on Sat Sep 17, 2011 1:24 am

This is the track included on the 2003 CD reissue of "Takes Off".

Can anyone, please, tell me when this version was first released?

It's the seventh track on the JA Takes Off Album. Don't confuse it with It's No Secret's B side which is Runnin' 'Round This World. It was first released on that album, not before. What I can't get yet is what was sensored!

I read in (I think) the liner notes to the boxed set "Jefferson Airplane Loves You" that the lyrics in question came from this stanza:

We use to dance out to space without a care
And our laughter come ringing and singing
we roll round the music,
Blinded by colors
come flashing from flowers
that sway as you stay here by me.

Originally, the final line was "that sway as you lay under me", which makes it pretty clear that this about two people having sex. It's also possible that the top brass at RCA were worried that references to "dancing out to space" and "colors come flashing from flowers" were references to using LSD or other hallucinogens.

All pretty tame by today's standards, but remember that the song "Runnin' Round This World" was completely removed from the record because of the line "the nights I've spent with you have been fantastic trips."

Can I, firstly, thank both CookOfTheHouse & Lather69 for taking the time to reply.

Lather69 was 100% correct about the lyrics on both versions!!

However, on "Ignition" both the stereo & mono tracks use the censored lyrics, as does "Takes Off" on track 7 with the uncensored line of "that sway as you lay under me" only appearing as a bonus track (number 17) on the 2003 release.

So, does anyone know if the uncensored version has ever been released prior to 2003?

I would guess that it was recorded at the original sessions for "Takes Off" and then the replacement line edited into the song for he actual release, but could (of course) be wrong!

Censorship makes me laugh in the 60s.....if censorship came across Liz Phair back then, they would have committed mass suicide:):):):):)

Give it to me, don't give it away
Don't think about what the others say
My skins getting clear, my hairs so bright
All you do is fuck me every day and night

You're my secret beauty routine
Na, na, na, na, what my body has seen
I am lookin' good and I'm feeling nice
Baby you're the best magazine advice

Gimme your hot white cum
Gimme your hot white cum
Gimme your hot white cum
Gimme your hot white cum

I'm gonna pull you back down between the sheets
Everything is fresher when the day is sweet
In the morning light when you're already on the phone

Face it, one of these days
Without you I'm just another Dorian Gray
It's the fountain of youth
It's the meaning of life
So hot, so sweet, so wet my appetite

Gimme your hot white cum
Gimme your hot white cum
Gimme your hot white cum
Gimme your hot white cum

Face it, one of these days
Without you I'm just another Dorian Gray
It's the fountain of youth
It's the meaning of life
Baby you're the best magazine advice

Gimme your hot white cum
Gimme your hot white cum

Gimme your hot white cum
Gimme your hot white cum
Gimme your hot white cum
Gimme your hot white cum
Gimme your hot white cum

OR (1983)

Oh oh
Wee-ell-Now!

Relax don't do it
When you want to go to it
Relax don't do it
When you want to come
Relax don't do it
When you want to come
When you want to come

Relax don't do it
When you want to to go to it
Relax don't do it
When you want to come
Relax don't do it
When you want to suck to it
Relax don't do it
When you want to come
Come-oh oh oh

But shoot it in the right direction
Make making it your intention-ooh yeah
Live those dreams
Scheme those schemes
Got to hit me
Hit me
Hit me with those laser beams

I'm coming
I'm coming-yeah

Relax don't do it
When you want to go to it
Relax don't do it
When you want to come

Relax don't do it
When you want to suck to it
Relax don't do it (love)
When you want to come
When you want to come
When you want to come
Come-huh

Get it up
The scene of love
Oh feel it

Relax
Higher higher

Hey-
Pray

Plus!!

Please don't forget the sound effects!

Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Liz Phair wrote those lyrics in a time when nobody gave a fuck about sexual explicit lyrics.
In a way those "innocent" lyrics of JA's (and other's) songs were much more daring. Grace Slick was and still is much criticized, but she was one of the pioneers. Listen to "Across The Board": "Seven inches of pleasure..." or 'Milk Train".

I get your point, but the sheer guts that Liz had in HWC is far from Grace's wildest lyrics :):):)!!!!

It's not great poetry, is it? More like the stuff found under hedges with the pages stuck together.

"Run Around" has poetry, in the way the words circle from love to hate and back.

Many, many thanks to all who took the time to reply.

I've now been in touch with Craig Fenton who tells me that as far as he is aware the uncensored version had not been released prior to 2003.

Interestingly, he, also, pointed out a similar case (but in reverse) with "Runnin' 'Round This World," which was censored from all but initial copies due to the line "The nights I've spent with you have been fantastic trips." "Trips" was blocked out, until the remaster.

I don't know about an official release but I've had it on a bootleg cassette since around 1990. It sounds like it's come from vinyl, so it's either from an acetate or a bootleg single.
