I was told theat "lather" was a nickname for one of the drummers that played in JA and given the time frame, "don't trust anyone over 30" was a common saying. The Revolution was for and from the young. So the song, as I was told, was about this drummer (I forget which one) turning thirty and not knowing what to do about it. Stay a hippie drummer or "grow up" and do what society deems as right.
