I always wondered what instrument played the middle part of Lather, starting at 1.23

I don´t think, that it is this instrument.
This thing (in German "Maultrommel") sounds like in the intro of the old Sesamy-street TV : oing, oing...

I think in Lather, it is just the voice of a man/woman? Isn´t it???

that could be it Chasin-Destiny - it definetely sounds like a vocally-driven instrument

Just listened to the song - isn't it just a guitar? I'm not sure.

Since I dug out the album anyway, I had another listen to CSN's 'Wooden Ships', and I just don't think it has the power, atmosphere or skill of the Airplane's version... anybody else agree?

yes agree with you.
csn-version seems to describe a holiday-trip to the caribic.
doesn´t fit to the text.

I first know the CSN-version and after that the Airplane-Version.
Wow! What a difference. Airplane is great.
But the voice of Grace has a little bit another sound, than on the former albums, not so clear. Another mix? Sometime a little bit too theatrically, I think.
