The song "Today"; ...let´s talk about

Postby Rüdi on Tue Jul 31, 2007 5:51 am

Hi,
I just began to explore the JA-music for only three weeks, and by now I nearly fall in love with the song "Today". I have heard it on the Live-CD "Bless its..." and and on the CD "High flying bird, Live at Monterey".
The version on the Monterey-CD I think I love most, because the voices of Balin and Slick are better recorded in the front, and Slick sings a kind of second voice there in the third verse, which is very very nice. Unfortunatly there, the first verse is totally damaged by many acoustic feedbacks, so that it is awful to listen.

What is your favorit version of this song, and on which CD/LP is it on?

Are their other songs from JA (Slick solo?) sounds like this one, so slow and kindly?
Is their an kind of "unplugged" version, where the voices of Balin and Slick are on the spot? How is the studio-Version from "Today" on the "Surrealistic pillow"?

The studio version has a prominant acoustic guitar part but an electric (sounds like a hollow bodied one, maybe) plays the melody line. It's also played at a slow tempo. It doesn't have the keyboard part prominant in some live versions. It's very beautiful.

I recommend getting the new RCA/ BMG remaster of Surrealistic Pillow to hear it or since you're new to the band maybe The Worst of Jefferson Airplane or The Essential Jefferson Airplane as those are good compilations and you're new to the band and may want a good introduction to JA's studio work.

:D Today is my fave JA song written by Marty. I prefer the Surrealistic Pillow version because it is well arranged and Grace sings it majestically. It was written by Marty, but in my op with Grace's beautiful voice in mind. Overall, I like all the versions of Today. You ask if there's another song like it and "Runaway" rapidly comes to my mind (on the JS album "Earth").

Hello Rüdi ! Glad that you are enjoying the Airplane's ride. Bless and Monterey are great live albums. Be sure to give the new "Sweeping up the Spotlight" a listen two, live at the Fillmore in 1969.

Personally, I think Today is a very hard song to do live, and therefore I like the studio version off of Pillow the best. This was the first album I heard of JA. I'm sure if you got hooked to the live stuff, you will love the studio versions too.

One of my favorite solo Grace songs is Triad, which should fit what your looking for. Also try Alexander the Great, which is one of my JA favorites. It is a little later than other JA stuff, 1972 on Long John Silver album, but not a Grace solo.

There are so many choices when it comes to the Airplane. They really reach across most genres, and there are a lot of slow songs too. Keep listening! :) :D :)

I don't understand your question or sarcastic statement.
Marty does sing lead on his song and Grace sings backup.

Monterey was always my favorite version. Though I hate the fact that Pennebaker kept the one-shot of GS in the film. Man, If I was Marty, would I be pissed!

I don't know of an unplugged or acoustic version, but one of the traded shows has a stripped down version that, though a little "heavy sounding," still sounds very good.

No sarcasm here.....on one of my many versions of Today, Grace's vocals seem to have been "powered" over Marty's and it seems she's doing lead, so I like to think Grace is actually singing lead.....unfortunately I have this version only on an old cassette!!

That song Today at Monterey is one of
these things

That question seems to be ghosting around here !
....Why is Grace in the picture ?

It's only the beauty of Grace...
If Grace would be a FAT UGLY BITCH ?
but a voice of an Angel ?

Marty would be in the picture,
and this question wouldn't excist !

Is that detail SOOO important after 35/40 years ?
Oh boy, maybe a lot of people hate me now...

What about Spencer Dryden ??????
Did someone complain that HE isn't in da picture ?
What about that ? Because HIS drumming stuff
and Jack's bass work IS the basement of JAs music....
Or not ?... Jormas guitar work is an other story...

I am NOT against Marty Balin or any other
member of the Jefferson Airplane !

 ...Yeah !!...Grace Rullezzzz...
 ...Love the one your with..........or shoot 'm !...

I agree....and I add that I have always loved Jefferson Airplane as a band, not only one or another member! Grace? She is special of course!
LONG LIVE JA!!

Thanks for this advice.
What is the sound on this CD?
Is it good and transparent?
At Amazon it costs 27 EUR, that´s really expencive.
I will look for a better offer.

The criticisms here:

sounds really good.

Yes,
I get a "Sweeping up..."-CD for about 12,- EUR.
The sound is really (very) good, perhaps sometimes a little bit tinny sounding .
But ultimately, I think, I prefer the "Bless its ..." a little more.
Some songs on the new one are a little bit less rocky and more funky interpreted.
One can see the development of the group.
