Remasters Question

Postby DonRico1967 on Sat May 26, 2007 3:13 am

I have recently obtained copies of the fine 1970-1973 studio releases by Paul Kantner, Grace Slick and, on the latter one, David Freiberg... The nucleus of what would become JEFFERSON STARSHIP.

1970 BLOWS AGAINST THE EMPIRE is credited to Paul Kantner, with substantial contibutions from Grace, Crosby, Jerry, Mickey, Billy, and the whole PLANET EARTH ROCK AND ROLL ORCHESTRA gang that made all of these albums as well as Crosby's solo LP and Mickey Hart's ROLLING THUNDER, so great...

My recently acquired BLOWS... CD is copyright 2005 and contains substantial liner notes as well as almost all of the original LP artwork... And, best of all, four (six?) unreleased gems of studio demos and/ or alternate takes.

So the BLOWS AGAINST THE EMPIRE remastered reissue is BAD AZZZZ...

BUT the 1971 SUNFIGHTER and 1973 BARON VON TOLLBOOTH & THE CHROME NUN CDs both are copyright 1997 and THEM are HURTIN'!!!

Not only do they lack extra bonus tracks, but neither of them include lyrics (which were contained on the original-issue LPs) nor anything but a poor reproduction of SOME of the artwork that accompanied those albums. As far as I can tell, they are not remastered, either.

I mean, sure, they contain extensive Jeff Tamarkin liner notes (big deal), but where are the reproductions of the lyrics and the illustrated librettos which came with the original LPs?

Did I get suckered into buying old CD copies which have since been updated and remastered (like the 2005 copy of BLOWS...) when newer versions do indeed exist...

Or are the folks at GRUNT / RCA / BMG just being lazy?

I WANT THE LYRICS AND ORIGINAL ALBUM ARTWORK FOR ALL THREE ALBUMS DAMMIT!!!

And what about MANHOLE, anyway?

Does anybody know what the deal here is???

Also... Same deal goes forthe RHINO releases of 1972 GARCIA solo LP which has LOTS of bonus material, but 1972 ACE by BOB WEIR ain't got NUTHIN'...

The HELL is goin' ON!?!?!?!

Anybody?

With all due respect (MUCH!!!)...

Your answer does not satisfy me, CD.

So... What the REAL deal here?

Have those posterior-released albums been re-imastered and re-issued with bonus stuff or WHAT???

I think that's more the case.....due to discographic laziness like you said.

Yeah yer probably right.

Pisses me off though.

So to RCA / BMG:

Dear multinational mega-corporation:

So charge us a couple extra $...
Whatever...

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do...

But PLEASE re-master AND include ALL of the original artwork, lyrics, libretto booklets, etc.

I want a LONG JOHN SILVER CD that folds the little CD insert out into a little 5"X 5" weed stashbox, just like the big one that came with my old LONG JOHN SILVER LP album!!!

And a BARK CD that comes with "The Bag" like the original BARK LP album!!!

AND GIVE ME SOME BONUS TRACKS TOO!!!

Sincerely,

-- Faithful JA consumer

RCA,Sony and others...

We have to develop/ discover something
to shrink that stuff, put it in a plastic cover.
At the size of a normal CD-box, and if you open up that thing...
A little BIG BANG, and it expands to it's original size...

 ...Explosive good music...

I had to get the japanese versions (from amazon) to get them but:

the bark CD comes in a beautiful paper bag reproduction with full artwork and the Long John Silver comes in a ready-to-make stash box just like the original LP.

even though they're japanese they have everything in english and they didnt cost more than a normal CD really.

hope that helps.

PS - no bonus tracks on them though.

I have the 'normal' version, but I don't know if the Japanese edition is better in sound etc.
If there are any bonustracks....hopefully they will release a special edition one day.
Long John Silver was released on another record label???
BMG did remaster the earlier records..

I went to BORDERS Books & Music... Here in the GREAT ( ) U.S.of A....

They did not stock BARK or LONG JOHN SILVER, so I used their computer-thingy to try to order them in...

Funny thing is... They offered two versions :

One of each was priced at $16.98--- All the songs, everything looked OK...

So I ordered them.

Another selection was priced at $49.98!!!

Of the very same albums!!!

I asked the BORDERS guy "What is the difference here?"

Of course he could not tell me... No clue whatsoever.

I figured out that the more expensive ($50) versions were indeed JAPANESE imports!!!

Well as much as I would have LIKED to--

PHUCK THAT!!!

I ain't payin' no $50 just for a CD!!!

Gimme a fuckin' BREAK!!!

I just want the BARK "BAG" and the LONG JOHN SILVER "stashbox" in CD miniature-size...

And maybe some out-takes/demos/live versions would be cool too..

ARE YOU LISTENING RCA/BMG???

I'd also love to see Bark and Lohn John Silver on cd with their original packaging restored.

Bark and Long John Silver were both released on the Airplane's Grunt label distributed by RCA (now RCA/ BMG.)

I can think of ideas for bonus tracks.

Bark:
Feels so Good 9 minute version from JA Loves You boxset
Pretty as You Feel single edit

Pretty as You Feel was an edit of a 20 minute jam with Carlos Santana, does the full version or a longer version exist?

Other than Feels so Good, I wonder if there's longer or alternate versions of other songs

Apart from Feels so Good and When the Earth Moves Again was any other Bark stuff played live? I guess I'd have to look up an Airplane setlist website.

Another option is Mexico and Have You Seen the Saucers in new louder, clearer mixes

Long John Silver:

Grace has five cuts on the album, did she prepare even more that aren't included, or are there some demos like the ones on the Blows Against the Empire reissue and Volunteers sessions bootlegs?

Are there any longer or alternate versions of one of Paul or Jorma's songs?

If nothing else, it seems many if not all of the groups 1972 shows were profesionally recorded so that'd be a source for bonus songs.
