Pepper vs. the Piper

Postby briank on Mon Jul 11, 2005 11:43 am

I think it's pretty well understood that Jefferson Airplane is one of the best (if not the best) American psychedelic bands. But which is better of the two well-known British psych albums- The Beatle's "Sgt. Pepper" or Pink Floyd's "The Piper"?
I personally believe that Pink Floyd's album is much better then the Beatles' album. Sure, "Sgt. Pepper" has a couple really far-out songs, like "Within You, Without You," but EVERY song on "The Piper" is psychedelic, if not in terms of the music, then by the awesomely trippy lyrics. Some of the Beatles' songs seem to be trippy just for the sake of being trippy, but Syd Barrett seemed to have put purpose into every song.
That's my opinion, and I know there are other British albums worth mentioning, but these two seem to be the most popular; I still would recommend both of them. I figured I would try this poll here on "neutral ground."
So, now let's hear YOUR opinion!

If your looking for wild and trippy albums by the beatles, id not use St pepper. " The White Album " is far and away a better album as far as weird goes for the beatles.

Sgt. Pepper was more influential, so i picked that one. I agree it has become a bit over hyped, but it did change how many musicians thought about records afterwards.
To bad you didn't add the following British albums to see what the people here think is the real classic 8) :
The Moody Blues - Days of future passed
The Kinks - The Village Green Preservation Society
The Zombies - Odessey & Oracle
The Pretty Things - S.F. Sorrow
The Who - Tommy
The Small Faces - Ogden's Nut Gone Flake
Cream - Disrealy Gears
The Great! Society Really Doesn't Like You Much At All.

:D :P  It's not that I don't like the Beatles....they were my start-off point after the r'n'r 50s of course, but I wanted more...more mind-blowin' stuff....big, dirty guitars with mellow psychedelic vocals: Jefferson Airplane!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D 8)

Happy lysergic trails forever!!!!

The Beatles (tied with Jefferson Airplane) are my favorite band, and Sgt Pepper's is one of the best of their albums, but I don't think it's an amazing example of psychedelia. So in my opinion, Piper wins. I love both albums, though.

It's very hard to choose...Beatles is my fav band, but Pink Floyd comes after the Beatles and I like both albums very very much...but I think Pepper was more influental and songs like Lucy, Within You Without You and especially A Day in the Life are invincible!!! So I choosed Pepper, but I must say that The Piper is the Floyd's best album and I like it in the same way....

As a psychedelic album, I like the 2nd album by the Floyd, A Saucerful of Secrets as well :) But Syd was a real genius and he made the 90% of the whole Piper!

King Kullen loves Sid, too!

Postby jimmie ray on Mon Jul 25, 2005 5:26 am

Heard at King Kullen supermarket on Sunday: "I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like..."
That was weird, does the manager check in here?
Also heard some great old disco - "I'm just a Love Machine" (hooooowwwwwwwwaaa) and "Shining Star" (thumpa-thump). Hey, that's all some silly stuff, not serious tuneage or nothin'...
One more vote for "Piper", and a mention for Floyd's "Animals", which IS serious tuneage!!!!

Yes, I said "was" since musically anyway, he's no longer with us, but apparently in the best mental health of his life.

Are there any biographies on Syd? I'd love to learn about his life.

If only those lurid UK tabloid rags would leave poor Syd alone.
