Iron Butterfly were a bit fake, but I get a giggle out of listening to them. I don't think they were as cluelessly fake as Strawberry Alarm Clock were. ("Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow" is an accidental exception.) The Doors sound naff without being fun, and that's the problem for me.
Dream-like rather than glittery is how I think of it. We've all been to that place whether we remember or not. To bring back an entertaining and evocative chunk of it as music is a great achievement. I think of psychedelic music as a relative of Surrealism; horribly beautiful and blackly hilarious, a madness that is truth, terrifying ecstasies, and so on. Gloom just doesn't make it.
