On another thread, there was some discussion of turning one's old cassette tapes into compact discs and MP3s. This is a way you can do it at home that is totally free, given you already have the materials.

Converting Cassette Tapes Into MP3

First, you will need the following:
- Tape Player with a Headphone Jack
- Computer with a Microphone Jack
- Cord with a Headphone Plug on Each End
You will need to download and install the following:
- Audacity Music Editor

- MP3 Encoder

Once that is done:
- Put the tape you want to record in the tape player.
- Hookup the headphone cord into the headphone jack of the tape player, and the other end in the microphone jack of the computer.
- Open Audacity.
- At the top is a row of buttons. The red circle records and the orange square stops.
- Once you are ready, hit the record button, and then press play on the tape player.
- Audacity will record the tape.
- Once everything has been recorded, press the stop button.
- Now, go to File, Export as MP3. The first time, Audacity will ask you to give the location of the MP3 Encoder that you downloaded earlier.
- The recorded music should now be a MP3 file on your computer ready to burn on to CD!
You can also create individual tracks off the cassette by recording one track at a time, stopping the tape player and recording simultaneously, exporting the file, and repeating.
Audacity also has a Noise Removal option that can take out the background hiss and other editing features.
