Monterey

Postby Dormouse on Tue Jun 17, 2008 7:55 pm

Just to remind everyone,

Yesterday, today, and tomorrow (June 16, 17, and 18) is the 41st anniversary of the Monterey International Pop Festival.

This is the best performance ever in my opinion! It is less well known than Woodstock, but Monterey was where the stars were born and where the great got greater!

The Airplane played an amazing set just under forty minutes forty-one years ago this evening (June 17).

Needless to say, everyone must hear the Airplane and the other bands at this event!
If anyone does not have the Airplane's set from this event, PM me!

I really enjoyed the film, especially that odd moment when Grace opens her mouth and Marty's voice comes out!

You can bet Marty was thrilled when he first saw that.

He was pissed off. It wasn't her fault, but Grace was a magnet for idiots with cameras.

LMAO. The cameraman was probably so interested in what Grace was doing that he didn't even pay attention to who he was filming.
Maybe he thought she was the one who sang it in the first place??? LOL, that'd be....odd. heh.

Be that as it may, it's a lovely version of the song.

It's covered in Jeff's book on pp 140-141:

Marty: "I was really hurt. I was young and I was like 'Awwww, I sing the whole song and I don't even get to be seen.'"

D.A. Pennebaker: "It was a dumb problem. We didn't know ... there was no microphone on her. (1) And the only lighting was not on him." (2)

(1) Not true. One can hear Grace very well sing harmony on the song.
(2) I doubt very much that this is true.

Yes, it is a great version of the song. My favorite one.

Normally when concerts were filmed they'd have had two or three cameras running simultaneously, and they could make the decision who or what to show on screen in the editing stage. Maybe only one camera had film left in it, and it happened to be on Grace, so they were stuck with that point of view. Or maybe it was just poor editing.

Given the times, they did a good job with the cameras and editing!:)

It's a complicated business, and can easily go wrong. I was on one job filming a concert, and they wouldn't let me put a mike on the stage. What they gave me instead was the output of the mixing desk, which was missing half the instruments. Total fuck-up.
