The Mamas and the Papas

I have heard a lot about The Mamas and the Papas being called an "LA band", as opposed to the San Francisco bands such as the Airplane. From what I understand, some claim that basically they were trying to reach a more mainstream audience, and not focus on the music so much as other bands.

I listen to them quite often, and don't really agree. I think they have musical merit of their own and some of there songs are comparable to the Airplane's.

Just wondering if anyone else liked The Mamas and the Papas, and how everybody felt them being called an LA band.

mamas and papas were a great group. I wouldnt say they were an LA band or not. Cass had a place out there I thought at one time or something maybe. I listen to their music from time to time and still enjoy it. Their performance at Monterey was a great one and Cass Elliot can actually be seen mouthing the word " wow " as Janis Joplin belts out Ball and Chain with Big Brother. Cass herself was a great talent. If not for John Monterey would have never happened. Denny was a strong part of the group. A shame Michelle is the only living member of The Mamas and Papas left , all the rest have passed.

Cretique Alley is among the best songs they did I think. Monday Monday isnt such a bad song either.
