A Jet Age Sound!
So declared the back cover of a record album titled Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, in attempting to describe the stunning and exciting new music contained within. Like a jet, it soared, and like the skies above, it seemed boundless. The year was 1966 and the world was a place full of possibilities, of ever-expanding horizons.
Over the next several years, as the Jet Age evolved into the Space Age, the explorers who called themselves Jefferson Airplane would increasingly come to represent, for millions of fellow voyagers, just what it meant to keep reaching toward the outer limits. These intrepid travelers from San Francisco, these gifted, farsighted musicians for whom nothing was impossible, defined the time in which they flourished.
Now, as the new century unfolds, Jefferson Airplane as a functioning entity is long gone. But their music continues to inspire and enlighten, expanding minds and touching hearts as it has done for decades. The Airplane are icons, synonymous with one of the most volatile, chaotic, joyous and thrilling eras in modern history.
